About this place
Once you take a seat, the first dish to order is the signature kurikara-yaki. Pieces of eel are wound around skewers, basted in sweet-savoury tare, and charcoal-grilled until delightfully fragrant, letting the rich flavour of the tender flesh shine through. Being able to enjoy eel skewers casually in a classic tavern setting pairs naturally with an icy bottle of Sapporo Lager or a shochu highball for your first drink.
The menu reflects daily seasonal arrivals and dependable tavern classics. Oily sardine sashimi is refreshingly clean, while gently seasoned, deeply simmered pots of motsuni tofu (offal stew with bean curd) or dojo loach hotpot offer comforting warmth. Old-school fried bites and cold snacks are equally easy to order, from crunchy crumbed aji fry (horse mackerel) and multi-layered ham cutlets to potato salad or macaroni salad for a welcome palate cleanser.
The drinks list covers multiple bottled beers alongside chilled or warmed sake, as well as sour cocktails made with Kinmiya shochu. Anchored by a large, irregularly shaped counter, the room moves at an unhurried pace shared by solo drop-ins and paired drinkers alike. It makes for an inviting respite on a weekday dusk, or during a leisurely Saturday session that starts in the early afternoon.
